COMPAQ CQ3274L Desktop PC Review

COMPAQ CQ3274L Desktop PCThis product is Compaq’s answer to the growing need of desktop pc. Most companies prefers branded Personal Computer (PC) over assembled, though this is not always the case with individuals.

Why Go For Branded?

One common benefit a customer can get from a branded PC is the license of the Operating System (mostly Windows) packaged with it. Though this OEM license is actually purchased with the unit and is not given for free.

Depending on the terms offered by the supplier, the OS may or may not be pre-installed with the unit. Some branded PCs are offered with Free DOS or with an open-source OS such as Linux.

Design

Compaq CQ3274L comes with a Mini-Tower Desktop casing, the power button is placed to the right (when facing system unit), it has 1 CD-DVD Writer, 2 USB Ports in front, 1 microphone jack, 1 stereo headset jack and 1 Digital media Reader. At the back of the system unit there are four (4) USB ports, 1 VGA port, 1 LAN port and 3 Audio ports. The 18.5″ LCD monitor is great.

Features

The PC being reviewed comes with a pre-installed Windows 7 Starter Operating System. All hardware are supported by the installed Windows 7 Starter. It also has a diagnostic cd that comes with it.

Performance

The PC boots Windows fast. I tried surfing the web using four browsers at the same time (Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera and Internet Explorer) with other applications running like Winamp, PowerISO (currently burning a cd), Thunderbird, Image Editing Software (editing a photo), Microsoft Office and Excel and it did not show signs of lagging. With its Intel Dual Core Processor E5400 2.7 GH, 2MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB and integrated 128 MB grahpics, it delivers an excellent performance.

Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor

I only have tried using the Digital Media Reader with a Memory Stick Duo™ and it worked very well. When I tried using micro sd i did use a card reader. The CD-DVD writer is excellent, I already have copied more than a thousand non-proprietary cds and until now the writer is still working great.

The only minor thing I found out so far was one of these units got its LAN port malfunctioning, I figured it out after several reboots, realizing that the computer will only load windows when its built-in LAN is disabled. The pc is 14 months old is no longer covered by warranty. Though it only happened in one out of 40 PCs, the problem was easily resolved by simply adding an old NIC card from our old computer. After rebooting the OS (Windows 7 Starter) automatically detects the hardware and installed the necessary drivers and the pc was up and running.
