Vivica A. Fox: Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you loved? Why or why not?
Miss Philippines: If I had to change my religious beliefs I will not marry, the person that I love, because, the first person that I love is God, who created me. And I have my faith, my principles, and this is what makes, me who I am, and if that person loves me, (he) should love my God too. Thank you.
Shamcey Supsup finished Third Runner-Up in Miss Universe 2011, causing some people to think and talk over about her answer to the final question.
It seems that Shamcey’s answer rooted in the teaching “Love God Above All”, which is common to all Christians that God must come first in everything they do.
Some people may find it unfair, difficult or impractical. There had been countless times that a person (man or woman) will not marry her special someone because of this conflict of religious beliefs. We have read, seen and heard sad stories of how religious beliefs became a hindrance to marriage. This is really sad, thinking of two people so in love with each other, and yet they find it very hard to marry because of this difference, unless of course one of them will give way and “change her/his religious beliefs”.
In the Philippines, giving up or changing religious beliefs is a big issue. You will have to consider what your parents, your friends and members of your church will have to say. They will surely call you the “weak link in the chain”. Besides, in this Christian country, believing the same GOD does not mean having the same “religious beliefs”.
Now back to the question, did Miss Philippines’ answer cost her the crown?
